COULD HAVE NOT SAID IT BETTER MYSELF. HAVE HAD COUNSELORS AND EXPERTS PAID LOTS OF MONEY FOR WHO WERE SHIT. HOW MUCH CONVICTION TO PATIENTS CAN HAVE WHEN MONEY IS INVOLVED.
STUPID IDEA.
Rick-
Personally I think that one of the bigger and more common mistakes patients make is to believe that health care professionals are actually altruists, and that they would do their work for free if they could still pay their rent.
The reality is that they run a small business, no different than a dry-cleaner. They have a bottom line. They have a desire to see more money coming in than going out, and to aspire to be financially comfortable. To that end patients should be more willing to fire them when their services don't measure up.
Becoming a health care professional requires a commitment beyond what we insist upon in other fields. Who would go through the extra years of education and additional debt merely so they could not get paid for the services they worked so hard to develop? What other industry supports or encourages this self-defeatism?
Ross
Ross, I second what you wrote and completely agree; this is a profession that takes quite a bit of education and expense. Though, counselors are passionate about their profession, they also need to earn a living.
I shouldnt cut you down Vic. You are trying your best to help others. I am not blaming you.
Faith, I understand your perspective and that's why we have this Site, it's people offering one another help and support. Though, for counselors it's a profession and how they earn their living. They help others, because they are passionate about what they do, and offer their expertise at less cost here at Support Groups then they would for in-person sessions.
Sending you many positive vibes and wishing you all of the best.
Oh Faith I bet Vic doesn't feel like you were cutting him down. I bet he realizes and understands your questions. I think this is the least judgmental place I've ever seen!!
I think change sometimes can be very scary or unsettling, especially for people who've found this place their "comfy place to land" and it's all they've known as far as how the site works. I love some of the new changes. I can't wait to learn how to use the support network features. Honestly I think that feature alone, will help with those of us who really need this place to be a comfy spot to come and post absolutely anything and everything that's on their minds. I hope thats how it works??? Geez, maybe I should not say that until I know about the new feature!!
I truly am looking forward to seeing the changes as I've gotten used to the idea of the evolution of this site, just like everything else in the world. We will all be fine and we will probably be totally in love with some of the new stuff before we know it!!
One thing I am afraid of though, is councelors putting others down for the advice or support they give someone. I think it's making some of the people talking to me, a little gun shy of being put down.
So, I am up for the challenge Mr Vic!!! :) Thanks for being patient with us all!!! We are worth it, I promise!!! LOL Thanks or always listening to everyone's input!!
Sending hugs to all, Suzee
LOL should have previewed that message.... LOL I didn't mean can post absolutely everything and anything, but that no matter how many different groups we need to have info or support etc.. will be easier to keep track of if we have a support network that keeps track of all of the pertinent groups that we post in.
I also think that some of the judgements and put downs about staying out of other groups ect.... Is why we have several pages long with no responses in the "support someone" button...... People are afraid they are no longer welcome if they aren't specifically in that group and have someone else's judgement of "qualified" to be supportive of that person.
More hugs, Suzee
Keep in mind he said they're bringing on qualified counselors available to work in a one-on-one setting with people who want that. It doesn't mean that suddenly this place is going to be crawling with holier-than-thou counselors who are money-hungry and judgmental.
As for why shouldn't it be free-- be reasonable. Licensed, credentialed counselors and therapists are entitled to charge a fee for their services, period. There is a sense that because so much is available on the internet seemingly without any cost that the notion of charging for something is somehow egregious or outlandish. What's outlandish is thinking that their time and wisdom is of great value unless you have to pay for it. In the end, the consumer has the choice of hiring one of these counselors or not. Nothing will be lost at this site with the inclusion of these counselors, only another dimension added.
I agree with Ross. I think it is a terrific idea. Many people who troll and indulge here would appreciate a easy, don't even have to leave the house, way to speak to a professional counselor.
Some of the counselors may have a sliding scale fee, or choose to do a pro-bono on occasion.
I imagine the counselors would post a resume highlighting their specialities. I have confidance that Vic and the team of 'we' to bring in the right people.

See what I dont understand is why cant couseling be free? If I was a couselor I would do it free cause I wanna help others. What if people cant afford counseling at all and need it? You just gonna let them suffer? Sorry I just wish people in the world would be more helpful and supportive. Life would be so much better.
